What & Why

The Anacostia Waterfront revitalization began 10 years ago when the District executed a Memorandum of Understanding for the Anacostia Waterfront with over 20 District, Federal and State agencies.

Since that time, the District?s Office of the Deputy Mayor for Planning and Economic Development (DMPED), District Department of Transportation (DDOT), and the Office of Planning (OP) have worked collaboratively to plan $9 billion worth of public and private improvements within the area.

The vision for the Anacostia Waterfront is:

  • A clean and active river
  • Gaining access to, along and across the river
  • A great riverfront park system
  • Cultural destinations and places of distinct character
  • Building and sustaining strong waterfront neighborhoods

These three agencies are playing a lead role throughout the revitalization and have established an Anacostia Waterfront team that works within the area.
